Meet Kai Sehr, the award-winning director with a passion for storytelling as unique as his journey. Ever since his days as a nurse in a closed psychiatric hospital, Kai knew he wanted to work closely with people – little did he know, it just meant he'd be swapping bedpans for cameras!
This quirky AFI alumni is drawn to the authenticity of real people in front of his lens, whether it's for commercials, activation stunts, pranks, or documentary films. Kai captures the raw, unfiltered power that no one can fake, just like he's seen in those hospital corridors.
But Kai doesn't just bring his creativity and his love for people to the set; he brings a whole lot of passion too! His lifelong love for skateboarding led him to direct "Skateistan - Four Wheels and a Board in Kabul" and while shooting the trailer for “Bucking Heart” he developed a love for horses which ultimately led him to forge a career as farrier. It's not every day you find a director who can seamlessly switch between nursing, directing and nailing horseshoes – a unique skill set indeed!
Kai's career is proof that when you mix a little madness with a lot of heart, you get a filmmaker who's not afraid to take life's wildest rides.
His commercial work scooped up accolades like 18 Lions in Cannes, 8 EuroBest Awards plus 1 Grand Prix, 25 ADC nails, CAA, New York Festival nods, and a stash of gold from Montreux, while "Skateistan - Four Wheels and a Board in Kabul" won "Best Documentary of the Year" at the Cinema For Peace Awards during the 2011 Berlinale.
